Here are the proper steps to holding a guitar pick:
Using your picking hand, make a thumbs up. Pointing to 12 O’clock.
Make a hook with your first finger.
Put these two fingers together. It should look like this. Make sure to leave an open space between the thumb and first finger.
Place the pick between the thumb and finger. It should be touching only the first joint of the finger and the thumb. Make sure to place it far enough in so that both your finger and thumb are entirely on the pick leaving only the very tip exposed.
Finished product. Notice the open space between the thumb and finger. Don’t crowd the hand up into a tight fist. Relax a bit, tension is never a good thing.
