Open or 1st Position On The Guitar

Open Position:   Also called First Position.

First lets define what a position is.  A position is the area or span of frets that your left hand can cover with out having to shift or move to reach a note. It is generally 4 to 5 frets wide.

Open Position is the are of the guitar down by the nut.  And spans from the open strings to the 4th fret.

 Here are some other facts about the open position:

  • It is where all of the most common beginner guitar chords are found.
  • It is also where beginners will learn their first notes and scales.
  • It is the most often used area on the guitar.
