How To Read Guitar Chord Diagrams

Here are the labeled parts of a Guitar Chord Diagram:  Its important to understand this so you can learn new chords.

Important things to remember:

  • The diagrams are upside down from the way you see the strings when holding the guitar.  The thicker/lower strings are at the bottom of the diagram.  This will take some time to get used to.
  • Learn the names of each string E B G D A E.  Here is an easy way to remember them from thin to thick.  Every Beginner Gets Dessert After Effort
  • The Frets move from left to right in ascending order.

Now lets look at an actual Chord (A minor):

0= Open string  x= String not played.  Circled #’s refer to the left hand finger used to play that note.
